Making a Splash with your Introduction
When you sign-up to do an MBA, one of the foremost thoughts that one usually has is, “My network will grow”, and you’re completely right about that.
Similar to that experience - your Stoa network is also one that is meant to multiply & grow.
When you first enter the gates of our Stoa Discord - one of the first things you’re made to do, is put up your Introduction.
But how does this further your quest of building a network - wellllll, in short, the better your introduction, the more conversations it will start. Prompting you to find your tribe in this digital world.
How do you write a good introduction?
Give them a hint of ✨you✨ in it.
Tell them about your hobbies & interests. 🏃🏽♀️ 🎭
Leave something for them to pick up & have a conversation with you about. 💬
In the outside world, Introductions are usually overdone & tiring, we mark ourselves by the places we work, cities we live in & money we earn.
This is your chance to break out of that mould.
Something your introduction should prompt other people to do, is to have a conversation with you about it. It’s also the best way to carve out a niche for yourself.
For eg. Many of us who interacted with her introduction, know that Apoorva Kanotra is a walking directory of pop culture information.
Another eg. is Monique who told us she’s lived in Madagascar, and she’s also aware that 90% of us know this from the movie alone - so she’s referenced it & very well.
It makes you want to get to know what her life has been like on an island a movie was based off of!
Think of it this way: It’s like writing an email, but as a text message, to a group of people you’re hoping will eventually become your friends & peers.
So, when you finish writing your own introduction, find someone else’s to also talk to them about.
It works two ways, this does, if you make these less like your resume, and inject more of yourself into it - you’re more likely to get responses asking about your experiences.
Discord isn’t really timed, it’s not an Instagram story that ends in 24 hours, you’re allowed to scroll up, and find old conversations and bring them up again. You can do this with Introductions too!
And don’t be scared to unarchive an old thread, it’s exciting for us to see that happen!
The force field of having a tight network within Stoa is one that gets felt very strongly, so use the resource & chance of doing it - to the best of your ability.
